Concubine Lane

In July 2016, Lonely Planet listed Ipoh as one of the best Asian destinations to visit. Photos of the Concubine Lane started appearing in news articles making it one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ipoh.

The Concubine lane or its current name Lorong Panglima is one of the three lanes given by a mining tycoon, Yao Tet Shin to his three wives. These lanes existed since 120 years ago. The lanes were named as Wife Lane (Lorong Hale), Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima) and Second Concubine Lane (market Lane). Each of the wives would collect rents from the shops in their own lane.

Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima) is the busiest among the three lanes today with a row of various shops, restaurants and a boutique hotel. It is not really crowded on weekdays. However, the place will be packed with visitors during the weekends. Some of the old houses along the lane are restored to what it used to look like in the old days.

I love those old style building, vintage buildings. It tell us stories where the past looks like, sense of heritage, cultural of ages. The combination of very old building & colourful modern goods sold might be visual pollution, but see everything in the good will, it prove that the history is real, and what we have right now; we should be thankful and blessed that we’re able to enjoy beauty of this heritage sites.
