Bukit Larut

Bukit Larut is one of the highland destination in Malaysia. It is located at an altitude of 1,250 m above sea level in Taiping, Perak. The hill is the wettest area in the country due to the heavy rainfall all year round. The hill’s daily temperatures are ranging between 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. It is an ideal destination for those wanting to escape from the heat and humidity of Malaysia’s lowlands.

Bukit Larut is a home to the oldest hill station in Malaysia. It was built by William Edward Maxwell, a British Assistant Resident in Perak, in 1884 to provide a cool retreat for the colonial officials. In 1910, the hill resort was gazetted as a permanent forest reserve. It was known as Maxwell Hill until it was changed to Bukit Larut in 1979.

Although it is the smallest hill and not as developed compared to other hill stations in Malaysia, it retains a colonial atmosphere with its quaint bungalows and English gardens. The hill features lush evergreens and a variety of vibrantly colored flowers such as daisies, tulips, roses, pansies, marigold, dahlias and petunias. Golden sunflowers, reputedly of the largest variety in the country, can also be found in abundance.

There is also a waterfall where visitors can enjoy a cool splash or a picnic. On a clear day, one can view the peninsular coastline and the Straits of Malacca, sometimes stretching as far as Penang to the north and Pangkor Island to the south from the watch tower. The hill is also ideal for birdwatchers and nature lovers, as the area provides a welcoming environment for the local wildlife.

Private vehicles are not allowed up Bukit Larut. However, the Land Rovers service is available at the foothill for transportation. The journey will take around 30 minutes to get to the top. The visitors are also free to walk up the hill. There are accommodation such as bungalows, cottages and rest houses available on the hill. Each of them has its name relating to their owner or style. Today most of these names have been localized.

This is a protected area. There are many jungle trails accessible for people who wish to view and explore the National forests with its flora and fauna, numerous species of birds and wildlife. As we approached the hilltop, I observed that the place had retained much of its colonial charm.

It is so good to just relax, read, retreat and do nothing in a cold weather with lots of greenery.
