Kellie’s Castle

Kellie’s Castle is Malaysia’s Most Famous Castle located in Batu Gajah, Perak. This unfinished mansion was built by a Scottish rubber planter named William Kellie-Smith. The mansion was built to celebrate the birth of his son and heir, Anthony.

The castle has a combination of Scottish, Moorish, and Tamilvanan Indian architecture. Smith brought in 70 craftsmen Tamilvanan from India to work on the castle. All the bricks and marble were imported from India while the exquisite tiles from Italy.

Originally, the castle would have boasted a 6-storey tower, an indoor tennis court, an entertainment area on the rooftop, a wine cellar, plus what would have been Malaya’s first elevator. But during the construction, William Kellie Smith died due to pneumonia during a short trip to Lisbon. His wife was devastated and decided to move back to Scotland. The construction on the castle was never completed.

Kellie’s Castle is now a popular local tourist attraction. Some believe it is haunted. The visitors can explore the interiors of the building which consists of a 4-storey tower, rooms of Smith’s children, the spooky wine cellar and the elevator shaft. The rooftop is also open to visitors where they can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding area. Selected rooms in the castle have been refurbished with furniture to show visitors what the rooms would have been like had the construction of the castle been completed.

Hear From Others

Overall, we had a great time there, mainly taking photos. For me, I would prefer to believe in the romantic part, like how I wish I could be rich enough to build a castle for my family and the legacy to live on!
