Merdeka Day
Malaysia Independence day is known as The Merdeka day. It refers to the day when the Federation of Malaya officially gain its independence from the British Empire. To commemorate the event, Hari Merdeka was declared a national holiday in Malaysia and observed annually on 31 August.
There usually a celebration at the eve of Merdeka. People gather around the Ipoh Square and celebrate. When the clock strikes twelve, they will start chanting the word "Merdeka" which means freedom. The Merdeka Parade is often held at along the road towards the Ipoh Town Hall in the morning of the Merdeka day. Lots of participants especially from the government agencies will parade along the road and give respects to the Sultan and the state leaders.
