The event falls in the month named Kartika right before the new moon appears according to the lunar calendar.

Prior to the celebration, houses are decorated with various of lights and kolam is drawn at the front lawn with colourful rice. Hindu temples are also decorated with flowers and offerings are placed at altars.

On the morning of Deepavali, many Hindus take an oil bath made from sesame. Then they will dress nicely in their traditional suit and go to the temple for the prayers. After the ceremonial rites, they will go back home and start receiving the guests. They normally serve food such as sweetmeats, rice puddings, and murukku.
