Pecal usually consists mixed boiled vegetables like cut long beans, beansprouts, water spinach, cucumber and tapioca buds. The mixture then is lathered with sweet and spicy peanut sauce.

The sauce is made from ground fried peanuts that were mixed with salt, palm sugar, tamarind juice, chili peper, galangal, kaffir lime leaf, garlic and water.  Additional side dishes like fried tempeh and tofu, bergedil, crackers or boiled eggs are often added to provide extra texture to the dish.
