St. Anne’s Festival of Penang

St. Anne’s Festival is the biggest Christian festivals in South East Asia. Saint Anne is believed to be Jesus’s grandmother.

The festival is very important in Penang. It is celebrated at the St. Anne Church and St. Anne Shrine in Bukit Mertajam, the Penang mainland. Both places are 2 kilometers away from each other.

The festival is held annually. It draws a huge number of pilgrims from Malaysia and the neighboring countries like Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia. The festival lasted for 10 days.

The festival includes a candlelight procession for the length of 3 kilometers from St. Anne Church to the St Anne Shrine, the statue of Saint Anne along with Virgin Mary were carried in the procession.There are also the ritual of nine-days novena and the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

The actual feast day happens on 26 July. However, the festival lasted for 10 days.
