P. Ramlee’s House
Ramlee’s House is the former crib of an iconic and legendary Malaysian actor, director, songwriter, singer, composer, and movie producer, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. P. Ramlee. He is of Acehnese descent and his original name was Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh. His parents were Che’ Mah Hussein and Teuku Nyak Puteh bin Teuku Karim, a sailor.
He changed his name when he began his career in the entertainment industry. He studied at the Penang Free School and got his major break back in 1948. He was spotted by a well-known Malayan film director while he was performing. Since then, his career excelled. Unfortunately, he passed away at the young age of 45 due to heart attack and was laid to rest at the Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur. During his lifetime, he was married three times. He was awarded the Malaysian honorific title, Tan Sri in 1990.
P. Ramlee’s house is currently a museum that appreciates and celebrates his illustrious career in the Malayan music and film industry. This museum is located on Jalan P. Ramlee (previously known as Counterhall Road). The museum is built as a traditional Malay kampung (village) house. Inside, there is a collection of Tan Sri’s P. Ramlee personal mementos. There are also exhibitions of movie posters, old photographs as well as music records.
Ramlee won a number of national as well as international awards during his lifetime. It includes more than 250 songs and 60 films that captured the hearts of not only the Malays but almost all ethnic groups in the Malaysian society.

I’d say, anyone who is a fan of the artiste should visit the house, and go through the old photographs on display as classics P. Ramlee and those of his third wife, Saloma, play in the background.

This is the house whereby I walked passed by nearly every day during my years in primary school, SRK Francis Light, which was also the alma mater of P. Ramlee. Nostalgic!.
